On January 19th The Back Channel said:
North Carolina gets the Google plant.
Though it was basically a competition between two metropolitan areas
(Charlotte and Charleston), the deal likely fell through for Goose
Creek because of state tax incentives (expected to reach $100 million
in N.C).
Considering what few big fish are actually out there. It’s probably
best to divvy up what little incentive money we have to the bigger
small fish.
Prime example is Thursday’s announcement
that Swedish hospital equipment firm Belimed will be building its $5
million American headquarters here in Charleston. Hey, it’s not Google,
but it’s 75 good-paying jobs. That’s a start.
All may not be said and done.
This morning at The Land of Ozz, Hank mentioned Google:
The official word is not yet in on this mysterious Google data center, but
you can pretty much bet that if it does come to Goose Creek
(affectionately known as Duck Ditch by some natives) then it will
likely be planted in the Mt Holly industrial park just off of Highway
52 about half way between Goose Creek and Monk’s Corner.
The local media has covered this story and a few bloggers. One
commenter from the Charleston area by the name of Lynwood Hines (hines1957) did a great job of hammering out some criticisms by others leaving comments on a Valleywag post about Google’s consideration of Goose Creek for one of its new data centers.
Data Center Knowledge had this on January 20th.
Google is apparently planning not one but TWO enormous data centers in South Carolina. That's in addition to the $600 million Google facility in Lenoir, North Carolina that was announced last week. An LLC associated with Google has submitted proposals for a massive data center
on a 466-acre piece of land in Blythewood, South Carolina (near
Columbia), with an estimated project cost of at least $200 million and
perhaps as much as $800 million.
Thanks for the link, Hank.
Anyone else have any details?
