Ever find yourself obsessed with how things rank against other things? We went looking for the most recent population rankings of American cities and found Charleston ranked 226th among all municipalities, with an estimated 2004 population of 104,883 and a growth rate of 8.4 percent from 2000-2004.
So who is just ahead of us, and how are they doing?
No. 225: South Bend, Ind.; 105,494; -2.1 percent. The biggest employer in town in Notre Dame University. Ouch. Tough year in South Bend.
No. 224: Norwalk, Calif.; 106,683; 3.3 percent. This suburb of Los Angeles is 63 percent hispanic these days and best-known as the place where the movie “Grease” was filmed.
No. 223: Allentown, Pa.; 106,732; 0.1 percent. Remember the 1982 Billy Joel hit “Allentown?” They’re still recovering from the demise of the steel industry in the city that gave birth of to America’s industrial revolution.
No. 222: Olathe, Kan.; 108,390; 16.6 percent. Like Charleston, Olathe is sometimes referred to as the Holy City. In this case it’s a reference the politically active, culturally conservative mega-churches in this prosperous and booming Kansas City suburb.
No. 221: Waterbury, Conn.; 108,429; 1.1. The civic motto of Waterbury, the one-time brass-fittings capital of the world, is “What is More Lasting than Brass?” The last brassmaking company in town closed decades ago.
