Manners: No, really, you go first.
Camellias: Like winter roses, but without all that bleeding and cursing.
Sweetgrass baskets: We know people who come here primarily to collect sweetgrass stuff. It's a local art, and worth supporting.
Catch your own food: Shrimp in the fall, oysters in the winter... and, may we add, dandelion greens in spring and flounder in summer.
The Beach (in the off-season): We read somewhere that the three most popular Southern vacation destinations were The Beach, The Lake and Mama's House. But when most people in the Carolinas talk about going to the beach, they're talking about Myrtle Beach -- which is to say, a beach-vacation theme park, in which the actual beach is almost an afterthought. Not so here. Lowcountry beaches are less crowded, less commercial and more beautiful than just about any stretch of sand we can think of, and we particularly love them this time of year, when you can walk alongside the surf and actually hear something amazing: the sound of your own thoughts...
