Male or female, young or old, blue collar or office worker, we all have one thing in common: Sooner or later we all need a whatzit. The short kind, with the opening in it that fits over the doohickey. When that fateful day comes, you don't need a place that sells hardware -- you need a place with employees who can translate "whatzit" and "doohickey" into "gasket" and "retaining clamp." And then find them for you.
So We Want To Know: What are the local hardware stores you trust when you're really just not sure what you need?
Leave your suggestions, impressions, links and arguments in the Comments section below. If we get good info here, a 5 List could be coming to a Friday section soon...
Ace Royall Hardware in Mt. Pleasant is fantastic. The employees are knowledgeable, happy and helpful. They do almost everything, even rewiring old lamps. Service is definitely a priority there. They deserve the business they have.

Agreed. Royall Hardware really bustles, but they will take time out to help.
Personally, though, I've switched my allegiance to East Bay Hardware. It's a high eclectic place, with a decent selection of art supplies, and the staff is so smart and helpful that they continually make me think I can do stuff that I really shouldn't.
The only problem with the place is that it's closed on Sundays.
Other places where I've gotten good hardware staff help around here: the True Value (?) on Wappoo Road, and Hughes Lumber on Mary Street.

I defiinitely agree that Royall Hardware is the best. They have been in business for many, many years (don't know exact number)and their philosophy is STILL service!!!!

Also, East Bay ACE, right across from Harris Teeter. Fabulous store with a big, back room for garden stuff, including lots of Carter & Holmes orchids.

Blackwell Hardware & Building Supply in Hanahan on Yeamans Hall Road. Nice helpful folks, fair prices, and a little bit of just about anything you need.
