It's the end of a Charleston radio era.
Charleston Live Journal:
I just heard from my friend, who said 96 Wave folded today. Weird. I know they've been going downhill for years, but it's just crazy to know that it will be gone.
Oh, and Chuck? The replacement? They have that here in Baltimore, and it's called Jack. And basically it's just a radio station with no djs, just a playlist and a bunch of commercials. It sucks.
Word came in today that Apex Broadcasting station 96 Wave (96.1 FM) planned to switch formats this evening from whatever kind of “heavy rock” hybrid they’ve been tinkering with this year to an “Adult Hits” (a.k.a. “Variety Hits” or “Classic Hits”) format. Rumor had it they’ll be named (or nicknamed) “Chuck,” similar to other Adult Hits station around the country.
I saw on another blog that 96 Wave is going away. Fine with me, they sucked in recent years anyways. When I first got here in 1997 they were a great station. It was that same year, IIRC that WALC 100.5 ‘Alice’ also started, and they were not that bad either - a little more ‘mellow’ than 96Wave.
The only Charleston radio station that mattered is no more. It has be replaced by "The New Upchuck FM".
96 Wave you will be missed.

So I am the only person on the LCB that listens to 104.5 for classic rock or (if I am in the mood for my own personal dinosaur music) 102.5 for *GASP* oldies?
I only listen to those in the car..we got the XM-Radio here in the house, NO Commercials! That radio paid for itself after the first 3 hours of listening to it with no commercial interruptions.
I am sorry for those of you who are losing a friend in Wave.

I thought this weekend was just a phase. I had no idea that the only good radio station in Charleston is no more!! For the few years that I moved away from the Lowcountry I was delighted to find out that I could listen to 96Wave on the internet. They were my only sanity those 3 long years, and I was very excited when I moved back, I would be able to listen to GOOD music again! I can't believe there is nothing left.
I also never heard a warning on the radio or elsewhere they were finished. I turned on the radio this weekend to the sound of horrible music. I guess radio stations, like people, go through bad phases and just sometimes they never come out of it!
If there is anyone out there that can help.... PLEASE bring us some GOOD music again!!

I have listened to 96-chuck the new station twice now. I have two comments.
1. crap
2. horrible
The only station playing the new hits in the R&R industry was 96 wave. I miss it. The old format for music was fine. It was all that crap in between that I didn't like to listen to. Now all I have is 100.5. Guess I'll hang out there now.
